About The Artist
I grew up by the sea in Hythe, Kent in England and spent every spare moment of my childhood playing on the beach (when there were no wartime mines to be dealt with by the army!) or watching ships through my telescope as they navigated through the English Channel - the busiest shipping lane in the world. I drew the ships endlessly, captivated by their beautiful lines and by the romance of travel to distant lands - and most foreign lands seemed distant in the fifties. When I left school in the 1960's, I had to choose between an art college and going to sea. In the short term, my youthful need for adventure won and I joined the famous shipping line P and O - Orient initially as a navigating officer cadet.
Some years and many adventures later I left the sea for a more lubberly land-based career, though I kept in touch with all things nautical through offshore cruising.
I am a self-taught artist who has painted for as long as I can remember. I have spent time in illustration and cartooning and have exhibited in London and across the South East of England. My paintings and prints are in private collections both in the UK and abroad.
I now paint full time, for commissions and for exhibition, and am happy to be able to combine my two passions of the sea and of painting. My work has been shown at The Saltgrass Gallery in Lymington, The Nevill Gallery in Canterbury, The Llewellyn Alexander Gallery in London and The Cross Gate Gallery in Lexington, Kentucky.I have written articles on painting techniques for The Leisure Painter Magazine. and at exhibitions in London and the South East.
I have had work selected for the:
ROYAL ACADEMY SUMMER EXHIBITION (including 2013)
ROYAL SOCIETY OF MARINE ARTISTS
